browser issues
This system has been optimised for standards compliant browsers.

This means Firefox, Opera, Safari, Chrome, and almost every other modern browser, EXCEPT Internet Explorer.

If you are using Internet Explorer, everything should still work, but things may not look so cool... we recommend you switch to a standards compliant browser, for a more secure and pleasant browsing experience.

articles and replies
The main content of this site consists of articles and replies to these articles.

This site has tree-structured discussion threads for each article, allowing you to reply to the main topic (using the reply box at the foot of the page), or to reply specifically to another reply.

This page describes how to browse these discussion threads, how to create a new article or topic, and how to post a reply or comment.

avatars
When you first join you will have a gray cameo avatar. If you click on this you will be given the choice of uploading your own avatar or choosing one from our gallery. Please do get yourself an avatar, it adds color to the site

You can change your avatar at any time, just by clicking on the avatar on your own home page.

rating the posts
Posts have ratings, shown in yellow stars. This is an average of all the ratings received for that post so far.

If the post is a reply/comment to another, then you first have to click on the post title to get that post on its own and thus see / set its rating.

Anyone who is logged in can rate any post: just click on the stars. Your rating is then shown in blue.

Members also have ratings, but you cannot rate a person directly - their ratings are calculated as an average of the ratings of their posts.

groups and private posts
System administrators can create groups. There are three types of group:

  • public groups: these are added on page 1, and posted articles are visible to everyone.
  • community groups: these are added on page 2, and posted articles are visible to anyone logged in.
  • private groups: these are added on page 4 (administrator's home page), and restrict access to members only.

In every case, the system administrators control membership of each group, and only members of a group can post within that group.

web sites and pages
EVOKE can be used to create and maintain flat (i.e. non-interactive page content) websites.

Note that, in order use this facility, you must currently have low level access to the EVOKE system code, to set up a style theme for this site: this process is not covered here: it will be replaced with online style theme configuration in a later version of EVOKE
